Please don't send emails about how road trips are not eco-friendly.  My intent with the Keepin' It Green page is not to make an environmental statement but to show that you can be eco-conscious while on the road.  It is easy to do your part at home but we often let those things slide when we hit the road.

Simple Ideas for Keepin' It Green on the road

  1.  NO bottled water... tap water is all good.  If water has a dirty taste, a water filter system like Brita works great and is quite cheap.  I use it at home so why not on the road.

  2. Reuse bagged ice instead of dumping it when it melt.  Keep bagged ice clean and ready to use as water in a water storage bag with a sealing key closure.

  3.  Recycle.  Keep recyclables until you find a recycle bin.

  4.  Solar Power for things like a laptop, radio, and the list goes on.  If you are off camping for days and use a car charger for your laptop the car needs to be running.  There are portable solar power packs out there for around $150 that will do the trick.  Who knows what other uses your will come up with for it as well.

  5. Tupperware is a fantastic way to store dry goods.  We tend to buy food items in single serving sizes when we are on the road.  Tupperware is convenient, and easy to clean.

  6. Reuse newspaper bags for dog poo bags.  If you are preparing for a big trip start saving newspaper bags or have friends and family stock up for you.
